Our Roots in Maritime History

In our earliest days Seaport Academy was located aboard the Lightship Nantucket berthed in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Our small group of student explored the ocean and maritime history and were deeply engaged in hands-on learning. From the very beginning, we’ve had a deep commitment to education that is individualized, experiential and connected to our community.

In 1997 Seaport came ashore and moved to a waterfront campus in Charlestown. We added the Boston Boat Shop to our program and began providing 502.11b educational services to cities and towns requesting specialized education.

We moved to our historic Chelsea location in 2017 and expanded our program to 28 students. Our maritime roots are still very a much part of who we are today. Our students explore the harbor and Boston history and continue to go fishing on our boats. They learn to sail and navigate, and study how climate change is affecting the oceans.

Seaport now serves students from dozens of cities and towns in the greater Boston area with an innovative program that engages the whole student and develops their social and emotional along side their academic skills.
